Portable platforms for telecommunication, security, and biomedical applications

Our research tackles technical challenges associated with improving energy efficiency and reusability of battery-powered system-on-chip portable platforms. Improving energy efficiency of portable platforms increases their operational sustainability, while improving their reusability increases their cost-effectiveness. Improving energy efficiency, however, inevitably worsens reusability and vice versa. To address this conflict, we undertake rigorous theoretical and experimental studies to identify and exploit an effective balance between energy-efficient and reusable platform features, while focusing on several core applications related to the emerging field of mobile health care. The scope of our research encompasses: 1) programmable architectures for the application domains of short-range wireless communication, attack-resistant data security, and biomedical ultrasound imaging, 2) analytical models that capture nonlinear dynamics of the platform energy supply and demand, and 3) optimization algorithms that automatically determine the best settings for programmable platform parameters per given application requirements.
