The basic oxygen furnace (BOF) is the principal technology used to refine blast furnace iron into steel in integrated steel plants. A mixture of molten blast furnace iron and solid scrap in the proportions 75:25 are charged into the furnace and refining is carried out by impingement of a jet of oxygen gas introduced through a vertical lance, which first oxidizes iron to form slag and removes carbon from the iron as carbon dioxide, also mixing the metal and slag, creating the so-called "emulsion", through mechanical action of the jet on the liquid A BOF typically refines 250 a ton heat of steel, achieving the end-point carbon content in about twenty minutes.
