Radiation therapy makes use of ionizing radiation to destroy malignant cancerous tissues. The success of a radiation treatment depends in part on the degree of accuracy to which the prescribed radiation dose (energy deposited per unit mass) can be delivered to the tumour. The first step involved in determining the dose to the tumour, is the measurement of the output of the irradiating device, which is, for many types of treatments a linear accelerator but is sometimes also a radioactive source.
