A novel detection method has been developed by integrating virus growth in cultured cells and real time polymerase chain reaction (ICC-rtPCR). This method could spot the viruses in drinking water and wastewater samples, and identify whether the virus is alive and infectious as well. ICC-rtPCR is very sensitive and much better than current cell culture method recommended by US Environment Protect Agency. Using this method, we have found living viruses associated with human and animal diarrhea in the treated wastewater. Undoubtedly, we can promote drinking water safety and public health when this technology is ratified in monitoring drinking water and environmental surface water.
