The mechanism of jet penetration into swine tissue from needle-free injection devices is not well understood. Previous research has investigated human devices, but they require a much lower injection pressure and dosage than devices used for animal injections. The objective of this research is to investigate the injection distribution that can be achieved by a needle-free injection device developed for swine in terms of depth of penetration and horizontal dispersion. Injection will be photographed using a high-speed camera to enable visualization of the dispersion. To enable photography, injections will be made into ballistic gelatine which is transparent and has previously been shown to have characteristics similar to tissue. Observing how the injectate travels through skin tissue is important in gauging the effectiveness of needle-free injection devices and achieving a more complete understanding of the affect on animal health.
