Funding is requested for the acquisition of a medium-sized dedicated, dual technology cluster whose main purpose will be the development of very large simulation codes by well trained graduate students, for eventual deployment on Compute Canada machines. This application emanates from three active computational simulation laboratories within the Department of Mechanical Engineering of McGill University: the Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, the Shock Wave Physics Laboratory and the Cardiovascular Engineering Laboratory. The 3 groups have a strong tradition of collaboration with the aerospace, space, health, architectural and utilities industries, locally, nationally and internationally. Their focus on the simulation of three-dimensional realistic problems has led them to autonomously develop their own codes. Addressing these types of problems requires solving large systems of mathematical equations that can only be done through powerful computers. Thus, the HQP component of this request is extremely strong: these Labs have constantly supplied Canada's industry with Masters and PhDs having very specialized computational development skills.
