Photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy are widely used to study the electronic structure, chemical, physical and optical properties of matter. Recently, there has been much interest in minute structures that span length scales from that of few numbers of atoms to more macroscopic dimensions on the order of microns. These length scales make it challenging to perform photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy. Advances in optics and lasers have largely overcome this challenge and with specialized microscopes, called confocal microscopes, light can be focused down to very small dimensions. It is unusual, however, that two ore more kinds of spectroscopy can be co-located so that information from one kind of technique coincides spatially with the information collected with another technique. This grant describes how a confocal microscope can be used to gather information about the vibrational properties of matter and information about the photoluminescent properties of matter at precisely the same location. To accomplish this, specialized motion control stages are required to move a sample around under a focused laser beam in steps that are on the order of tens to several thousands of atoms in diameter. With these capabilities researchers will be able to study the electronic properties of graphene (2-dimensional graphite that is one atom thick), DNA interactions with silver and gold particles that enhance the optical enhancing of light, lab-on-a-chip type sensing systems, minute semiconductor structures called Quantum dots, quantum wires and quantum wells, and even explore the forensics of art restoration.
