This equipment grant will allow the applicants to purchase a multi-purpose, 5kN electro-mechanical test system that will be used to investigate the mechanical properties of a broad range of structural biomaterials, including structural materials from nature, as well as synthetic materials that mimic natural designs and provide unique functional properties for application in biomedicine and industry. This facility will be available broadly, but the current application is based on research being conducted in the Department of Zoology and the Department of Chemistry at UBC.
