Scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) is a research technique for quantitative investigations of interfacial physicochemical processes in situ at the microscopic, nanoscopic and molecular scales in a wide variety of areas. The CHI920C SECM requested in this proposal is the extremely stable and versatile apparatus among the SECM family. Useful for both basic and applied studies, the CHI920C SECM is an extremely sensitive instrument, and it can be used as an electrochemical tool for studies of the local properties and reactivity of a wide variety of materials (metals, insulators, and semiconductors). SECM has a wide range of applications, including studies of corrosion, biological systems (e.g., cellular and enzyme activity, ion transport in channels of single cells), charge transport across liquid/liquid interfaces, electrochemical detection of single molecules, thin films and membranes. It is also a powerful tool for evaluation of the electrocatalytic activities of different materials for useful reactions, such as oxygen reduction and hydrogen oxidation.
