It has been a common practice to discharge water, wastewater and industrial effluents into open channels such as rivers and streams. The ability to model these flow systems and the associated transport of sediments and pollutants is of critical importance in understanding the environmental impact of such discharges. In most cases, the flows are turbulent, which means the mixing and scour that occurs is largely due to small-scale chaotic behaviour of the fluid. To better understand and control the above mentioned flows/processes, knowledge of the velocity field is an essential ingredient. Research in several of the above-metioned areas are in progress at the University of Windsor. An essential insturment in researching the flows is a velocity measuring device. To this end, an accoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) is being requested to measure the velocity of the flow simultaneously with scouring of the bed and movement of sediment.
