The proposed research addresses the optimization of the pressure drop across a variety of strainers manufactured by Rodger Industries Inc. These strainers are used to filter viscous liquids used in food and pharmaceutical industries. The proposal is directed towards developing standardized curves for pressure drop across filters that are customized to the properties of the pumped fluid (i.e., milk, juice etc.). The most important aspect of the study is to establish the relationship between the pressure drop and velocity distributions across the filter for specific classes of viscous fluids. An experimental rig will be designed and built at the University of Windsor. Using the set-up, high quality data will be acquired to establish a database for use by the industry. It is anticipated that future work will be carried out to develop numerical models, which will be validated and calibrated for use by Rodger Industries for a variety of fluids. Furthermore, future work using shearing thinning fluids will also be carried out.
