The Raman spectrometer that is to be purchased with this grant is a sensitive and effective instrument for the identification, characterization and study of chemicals and materials on the basis of molecular vibrations (i.e. how atoms move with respect to each other). The research groups involved with this application intend to use this versatile instrument to study a large number of different types of compounds ranging from catalysts for the synthesis of organic molecules, to new bulk phase and nano-materials, to coatings for surfaces and nanoparticles, liquid crystals, organic magnets, molecular machines, and much more.
