英文摘要
This request is for 1) A laptop based ultrasound system and accompanying signal processing unit 2) A non-invasive continuous blood pressure measuring system. My research aims to unravel how the pumping of the heart and the widening and narrowing of blood vessels in muscle is controlled to provide blood flow and oxygen to the muscles and maintain blood pressure during human physical activity. This research has provided training for 55 graduate students, undergraduate students and research associates over the past 6 years. Essential for this research are non-invasive methods of continuous measurement of heart and blood vessel dimensions, blood pressure and muscle blood flow in the intact human system. The ultrasound equipment is needed to replace the now obsolete and failing system currently in the laboratory. The blood pressure measuring system is required to replace borrowed equipment that is no longer available for use. Research findings made possible by this research infrastructure will identify limitations and "weak links" in the function and control of the heart and blood vessels in support of muscle during human physical activity. This basic research therefore informs the direction of research aimed at understanding problems with tolerance for physical activity experienced in various disease states and populations. Ultimately this basic science will guide the development of clinical and lifestyle interventions that promote the best quality of life of Canadians.
