We are investigators from the Research Group on Infectious Diseases of Swine of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Université de Montréal. We study how some microbes, bacteria, cause diseases in animals and humans. We study bacteria such as Escherichia coli (which causes traveller's diarrhea in human and a similar disease in pigs), Streptococcus suis (which causes a deadly infection of the brain in pigs and humans) and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (which causes a very contagious infection of the lungs in pigs). We are discovering the weapons that these microbes use to cause disease and learning how they work. This research leads to new diagnostic tools (we develop tests looking specifically for these weapons, for instance) and new strategies to control infection (drugs or vaccines that target the weapons, thus rendering the microbe harmless).
