The future of the oil sands will largely depend on revolutionary and transformative research and technology development. The oil held in these deposits could supply global energy demand for decades to come - while creating a superb economic opportunity for Canada - but at a potentially severe environmental cost, both locally and globally. Energy shortages are unadvisable and climate change unacceptable. Only proverbial "out-of-the-box thinking" may offer a solution. The research outlined in the Innovations Frontier application includes developing breakthrough technologies for integrated in situ recovery and catalytic upgrading of bitumen and heavy oil, particularly for Canada's oil sands while achieving lower costs and substantial reductions in GHG emissions and water utilization as compared to existing commercial practices. Applying this research and technology will solidify Canada as the world's oil sands leader.
