The project aims at perfecting reliable fabrication methods for preparing electrochromic coatings for protective eyewear that can change color at will upon the application of an electric field. The proposed coating systems will be based on normally transparent tungsten oxide or nickel oxide that can respectively present a deep blue color or a dark brown appearance when colored with the proper means. The project will address the challenge of achieving these inorganic electrochromic coatings on a plastic substrate that can exhibit highly uniform and rapid coloration and bleaching processes suitable for an eyewear. It also aims at finding a better alternative to the frequently used transparent electrodes in electrochromic devices based on indium tin oxide. Results found in the present project would eventually serve for a subsequent one aiming at constructing a full prototype for a commercial electrochromic eyewear.
