For many years blood flow has been considered strictly as a stand-alone fluid dynamic (plumbing) system, subject to only the physical laws of pressure and flow. In reality, in addition to these laws, blood flow is at all times subject to control and regulation by the autonomic nervous system. The reason for this situation is that the study of blood flow has traditionally been in the domain of engineering and mathematics while the study of the autonomic nervous system has been strictly in the domain of physiology. Having worked in the first of these domains in the last 4 decades or so, with considerable collaborative work with researches in the other domain, I believe I have now established sufficient collaborative links to enable me to put these two systems together. This proposal represents a research program for doing so.
