This research programme investigates, quantifies and models equilibrium and disequilibrium processes involving volatiles in magmatic systems. Together with students and other colleagues I study the role of volatiles in magmatic processes and their effects on volcanic eruptions. This research programme is founded upon experimental measurements and computer simulations. We apply what we learn in the laboratory to actual volcanoes with the collaboration of colleagues working in the field. By studying processes individually in the laboratory or simulating them on the computer, the significant variables can be isolated and we can determine their effects on magmatic systems.
