Volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) and volcanic- and sediment-hosted massive sulfide (VSMS) deposits are important contributors to Canada's zinc, lead, copper, silver and gold production. These deposits form from the circulation of hot, metal-rich fluids within the crust in association with submarine volcanoes and sedimentary basins. This research will be aimed at understanding the origin of these undersea volcanic environments, the sources of metals and fluids within these deposits, and how we can combine field observations and laboratory-based measurements to both understand how these deposits form through geological time and to create criteria that can be used to explore and discover the next generation of these deposits to be mined. The field research will concentrate on areas in central Newfoundland and northern Nunavut. The research program will involve the training of numerous students to create highly qualified personnel (HQP) that will be sought out by the mining and mineral exploration sector and will be trained in methods that will aid in the exploration and development of new mineral resources within Canada. These types of deposits have provided critical raw materials for much of urban Canada (e.g., southern Ontario manufacturing industry), but are also important sustainers of economic and social well being in rural Canada, including Canada's north. This research is not only of critical scientific importance, but is also critical for maintaining Canadian leadership in mining and mineral exploration and ensuring a secure supply of base and precious metals into the future.
