While the human genome is sequenced since 2001, the way it works remains poorly understood. Our group is designing computational and statistical approaches to identify regulatory regions - DNA regions whose role is to modulate the expression of a nearby gene. Gene regulation and mis-regulation is increasingly associated to diseases and disease susceptibility. The predictions made by our algorithms allow biomedical researchers to focus their resources on the most interesting candidate regions and suggests hypotheses that they can test. Our approach attempts to detect evolutionary signatures - specific patterns of mutations that are indicative of specific functions.
