As the the transmission of viruses from animals to humans becomes more frequent, a better understanding of the factors determining this ability is urgently needed. Morbilliviruses cause an acute and often severe disease in their respective host, but are quite host specific. In addition to measles (MV), the genus includes several animal pathogens, of which canine distemper virus (CDV) infects a broad range of carnivores.
