My research group focuses on the use of synthetic organic and inorganic chemistry to develop new tools and materials in nanotechnology, and materials chemistry for photonics. My research falls into two conceptually distinct but synthetically-convergent themes revolving around the use of polypyridyl-type molecules. Theme (1) is to develop new synthetic tools and methodologies to efficiently control the topology of complex molecular assemblies. How and why molecules thread is a fundamental question that scientists have been attempting to address for many years. Answering these two questions should increase our ability to (a) control the topology of non-natural supramolecular systems; (b) access new topologies with interesting and useful properties linked to their particular structure as has been demonstrated to be the case with many different proteins such as curculins and (c) understand the link between form and function on a molecular level leading to the eventual fabrication of nano-sized devices and machines. My approach centers on the rational design and synthesis of novel model systems that can serve not only to increase our understanding of topological selectivity but also can themselves possess intrinsically useful physical properties.
