ATLAS upgrade

The CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will have the highest direct energy reach of any particle physics facility for decades, and Canada's central role in the ATLAS collaboration at the LHC will keep us in the forefront of international particle physics. While the LHC and ATLAS are only now completing initial accelerator and detector commissioning with first physics results expected in 2010, it is already time to consider the upgrade program of both the LHC accelerator and the ATLAS detector sub-systems. By about 2014, several of the ATLAS detector subsystems will be reaching their radiation damage limit and need replacement. In order to extend the reach of the LHC physics program, it is intended to increase the instantaneous luminosity of the LHC in stages eventually reaching an order of magnitude increase. The increase in instantaneous luminosity will require significant detector upgrades using technologies capable of handling the higher rates and radiation doses. This request is for funds for Canadian physicists to perform the R&D necessary to continue our leadership in the ATLAS experiment into the future, including very high rate energy measuring calorimeters, radiation tolerant and thin pixel radiation detectors, advanced high-rate Cerenkov detectors and radiation monitoring devices.
