The CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will have the highest direct energy reach of any particle physics facility for decades, and Canada's central role in the ATLAS collaboration at the LHC will keep us in the forefront of international particle physics. ATLAS has already announced the discovery of a new particle consistent with the Standard Model Higgs boson, opening the door to a new era in our understanding or the origin of mass and matter. While the LHC and ATLAS will only complete our first extended physics operational period this year, we are already entering the construction era for upgrading both the LHC accelerator and the ATLAS detector sub-systems. In order to extend the reach of the LHC physics program, it is intended to increase the instantaneous luminosity of the collider. The increase in instantaneous luminosity will require significant detector upgrades using technologies capable of handling the higher rates and radiation doses. This request is for funds for Canadian physicists to design, build and install essential upgrades for the first phase of ATLAS upgrades, and to complete R&D necessary for longer term improvements.
