Young children develop the ability to use language within the first few years of life. While their ability to learn to produce speech in such a short time is impressive, research in the last few decades suggests that their capacity to understand the language around them develops even earlier. However, very little is known about these early representations of the language they hear. To what extent are they like our adult representations of language and how are they different? What perceptual skills and abilities do infants and young children bring to the task of language acquisition? How does infants' knowledge and understanding of language change over time?
