Concrete blocks are widely used in buildings for foundation and partition walls. In comparison to cast-in-place concrete, masonry block structures represent a low environmental impact construction system. It consumes less material, produces lower emissions and offers better insulation. Manufacturing of concrete blocks has the potential to go even greener through an early age carbonation process, an accelerated curing technique that utilizes carbon dioxide as the curing agent in place of steam and converts gaseous CO2 into solid calcium carbonates. For the same volume of concrete, the carbonation process requires 50-90% less energy than steam and the reaction itself is a CO2 sequestration process. The combined benefits of the process significantly reduce the carbon footprint and make it possible to reach a state of zero emission.
