In large-scale, mechanized agriculture air seeding has become the predominant seeding approach for many crops. This technology uses an air cart with tanks containing seed and fertilizer and an air drill that opens the furrows, prepares the seedbed, places the seed, and covers it up with soil. The air cart and air drill are typically separate pieces of equipment, pulled one after the other by a tractor. Seed is moved from the air cart to the air drill by a stream of air through a series of tubes. This is, in fact, a specific instance of what is generally referred to as a pneumatic conveying system.
