This project concerns the design of an electric power propulsion system for a series hybrid electric vehicle that uses batteries as the main source of energy to power the vehicle. High efficiency electrical machines are used to drive the vehicle and a high speed electric generator, together with a high efficiency combustion engine, provides an alternate source of energy to extend the vehicle driving range. To reduce the energy consumption of an electric a vehicle, it is not only essential to design high efficiency electrical components, but in addition, the control of these components and the overall energy management control strategy are essential in order to realize the benefits of the improved components.
