Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which literally provides a "ball-and-stick" picture of the solid-state structure of molecules, is perhaps the most critical characterization tool for inorganic chemists and is also very valuable for organic chemists, particularly for confirming atomic connectivity and relative (or absolute) stereochemistry. Although the SFU Chemistry Department has a modern single-crystal X-ray diffractometer, it is only equipped with a molybdenum-based X-ray source, which is not appropriate for making measurements on small and/or organic crystals. Thus, this proposal seeks funding for a critical upgrade to SFU's single-crystal X-ray diffractometer: the addition of a high-intensity copper-based microfocus X-ray source. This upgrade will greatly impact the research programs of most organic and inorganic chem. researchers at SFU by opening the door to obtaining high-quality structural data from small, weakly diffracting crystals and organic crystals.
