We are investigating the neural mechanisms underlying social behaviour in fish. Specifically, we are examining a group of neuropeptides (the 'nonapeptides', which include oxytocin and vasopressin) that are well-established to play a role in certain mammalian social behaviour patterns, but less well studied in other vertebrates or in other domains of social behaviour. Recent evidence suggests a broad role for these peptides, and we hypothesise that they may have modulating influences on social learning (learning from other group members) over and above their influences on grouping behaviour.
