Computational science has been revolutionizing the way science is done. At the core of computational science is the algorithmic description and simulation of the models that a scientist builds about the real-world. The power of these computer simulations is two-fold; simulations can check whether our understanding of the real-world matches with actual measured data, and simulations are also the vehicle to create new hypotheses and to discover real-world behaviors that would be very difficult to observe or measure. With well-tested and validated computer simulations as the proxy of real-world scenarios future behavior of these complex systems can be predicted, different states of a system as well as their transitions studied, or optimal and stable settings found.
