Upgrading of University of Calgary Electron Probe Microanalyzer

The aim of this proposal is obtain some mission-critical upgrades to the Electron Probe Microanalyzer (EPMA) facility at the University of Calgary. An electron probe microanalyzer is a sophisticated electron-beam instrument optimized for in-situ chemical analysis and chemical mapping of solid materials. The microprobe lab at the University of Calgary is the only one of its kind in Calgary and southern Alberta, and is a fundamental analytical 'pillar' for research activities in the Department of Geoscience and other Departments at the university. Over the last ten years, 44 university researchers from 11 departments, dozens of undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers in the oil and gas, mineral and engineering sectors, have used the facility to analyse and make fundamental advances in such diverse fields as: igneous and metamorphic petrology: ore deposits; oil and gas reservoirs; paleoclathrates; reservoirs used for CO2 sequestration; solid-oxide fuel cell technology; corrosion and scaling in pipelines; synthetic chemical substances such as films, polymers, electrodes, conductors; concrete and masonry; alloys, super-plastic materials, metal-ceramic interfaces welds, corrosion products; chemical fingerprinting of archeological artifacts. Planned future use is just as diverse.
