The aim of this proposal is to provide a mission-critical upgrade to the Electron Probe Microanalyzer (EPMA) facility at the University of Calgary, specifically a new energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). An EPMA is a sophisticated electron-beam instrument optimized for in-situ chemical analysis and chemical mapping of solid materials. The University of Calgary microprobe is the only one in Calgary and southern Alberta, and is a fundamental analytical 'pillar' supporting the university's research mission. Since its arrival in 2001, 44 university researchers from 11 departments in the university, dozens of undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers in the oil and gas, minerals and engineering sectors, have used the facility to make fundamental advances in such diverse fields as: igneous and metamorphic petrology; geochronology; ore deposits; oil and gas reservoirs and those used for CO2 sequestration; paleontology; solid-oxide fuel cell technology; corrosion and scaling in pipelines; polymers, alloys electrodes and conductors; concrete and masonry; chemical fingerprinting of archeological artifacts. Planned future use is just as diverse.
