Determination of ultimate pile capacity is important for proper design and construction of pile foundations. The pile capacity obtained from a load test, carried out shortly after the installation of pile, is often assumed to be the ultimate pile capacity in most design methods. However, the pile capacity could increase after installation as the excess pore pressure at the soil-pile interface dissipates. This time dependent increase in bearing capacity of piles, referred to as pile set-up, is not incorporated in current pile design. Therefore, current pile installation practice seems to be conservative as the contribution of capacity gain over time is neglected in the design.
