The oil sands in Northern Alberta are one of the largest unconventional oil deposits in the world. Bitumen is extracted from oil sands using water from the Athabasca River. The bitumen extraction process produces large volumes of oil sands process-affected water (OSPW), a complex, alkaline mixture of toxic organic and inorganic compounds. Oil sands companies are required to store all fluid wastes generated from bitumen extraction in tailings ponds around the mining sites. Appropriate treatment technologies are urgently needed to increase reuse and recycling of OSPW, and to improve the quality of OSPW so it can be safely discharged in the natural environment.
