New wastewater treatment concepts are based on source diversion of household wastewater streams such as blackwater (toilet water plus food waste residuals), with all other household wastewater (greywater) treated locally to maximize the efficacy of energy, nutrient and water recovery. However there are still significant technological research gaps. Further, source-diverted treatment systems have yet to be demonstrated in North America. This proposed CRC seeks to evaluate feasible technologies so as to demonstrate their operation under Canadian conditions, thereby reduce technical concerns, generate confidence in the overall treatment system performance, and help to guide future urban water management practices in Canada.
