Global sales of common non-rechargeable alkaline batteries are about 5 billion dollars per annum. These include the typical AA, AAA and D type batteries used in many household devices. State-of-the-art and rechargeable alkaline batteries (AA and AAA), offering up to 100 charge cycles, have been marketed by the Canadian company Pure Energy Solutions, which operates a manufacturing plant in Amherst, Nova Scotia. There is a strong desire in adopting and modifying the rechargeable alkaline technology, and scaling it up for flat-plate type batteries with applications for backup power systems. The materials used in alkaline batteries are low cost, abundant and environmentally friendly. Hybrid Energy Technology (HET), now possess the exclusive rights for development and commercialization of flat-plate rechargeable alkaline battery technology. The research program proposed here is a collaborative research and development project between UBC and HET to examine important fundamental and applied features of flat-plate rechargeable batteries.
