Synaptic inhibition is critical for the brain to function properly. My lab is focused on understanding the role of particular groups of neurons in generating this synaptic inhibition. We are preforming these experiments using the recently developed technique of 'optogenetics'. Optogenetics allows researchers to activate or silence genetically targeted neurons at the 'flick-of-a-switch'; the revolutionary power of this technique is what led to it being named the Nature Method of the Year in 2010. In this grant application we are requesting funds to purchase optogenetics stimulation equipment, which we can use in combination with our existing electrophysiology equipment.
