The capacity to acclimatise to hypoxia varies at both the individual and the population level. One of my central research goals is to understand the extent to which, and by what mechanisms, genetic background contributes to this variation. The model we use is acute mountain sickness (AMS), which is a manifestation of inadequate or delayed altitude acclimatisation. Our objectives for the next five years are fourfold:
