At a fundamental level, the ultimate function of all of life's processes is self replication. Like most animals, crickets do this through mating, a process that involves deciding on when to mate and with whom. In crickets and other insects, the decision on when to mate is closely related to flight behavior; mating is deferred until after dispersal or migration by flight. Recent work in my laboratory showed that flight itself can serve as a trigger to promote mating behavior and development of oocytes. One set of experiments proposed here seeks to understand the physiological mechanisms that link flight and reproduction.
