The Laboratory for the Analysis of Natural and Synthetic Environmental Toxicants (LANSET) is a research and training facility at the University of Ottawa that routinely analyzes a wide range of natural and synthetic environmental toxicants for the broader research community at the University of Ottawa and elsewhere. The analytical methodologies applied at LANSET mainly include the analysis of plant extracts and environmental samples by various chromatographic and spectrometric methods. Our natural product and environmental toxicology studies rely on samples processed with an Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE) system. The ASE allows for the rapid, and highly efficient extraction of a wide suite of molecules from a variety of sample types. In addition the instrument is a key step for metabolite profiling and quantification of known compounds and we have published several validated methods to optimize extraction of environmental samples. Using the ASE, we can analyze environmental samples for synthetic pollutants (with validated methods for pharmaceuticals, personal care products, steroidal estrogens, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and others), and algal toxins (microcystins, anatoxins, nodularin).
