The sheer number of threats posed to computers by malicious software like computer viruses is staggering. A number of anti-virus products defend against well over a million known threats, and that number is rising fast. The overwhelming sense within the anti-virus industry is that defenses that simply react to new threats are inadequate; proactive defenses are needed.
