Enabling access to information remains an important and challenging task. The tremendous success of Web search engines has raised user expectations to extraordinarily high levels. From my experience, people now expect information access systems to, in effect, read their minds. Rather than performing simple keyword matching, these system must accurately interpret the intention underlying a query. Response times must be essentially instantaneous. Satisfying these increased expectations in all areas of search, browsing and navigation, represents the long-term goal of my work.
