Maximizing the capacity of fiber communications is the rally cry for research in optical communications this decade, with focus on 1) high order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), 2) higher baud rates, and 3) spatial multiplexing. The requested upgrade will permit us to achieve experimentation at higher baud rates and to keep pace with ground breaking research in coherent detection. Our research group examines techniques for mitigation of impairments in optical communications links and for increasing the capacity of those links. We address both optical and digital signal processing (DSP) solutions from a systems perspective. Research addresses theoretical underpinnings, numerical simulations, component design and experimental demonstrations and validations. Current issues of particular interest include the use of coherent detection with higher order modulation formats - a topic with industrial importance and relevance, as well as information theoretic aspects of scientific/academic interest. The equipment upgrade requested will allow our experimentation in this area to move into emerging regimes of operation that now exist only in research laboratories, but are already on company roadmaps for commercial exploitation.
