The PON standard is currently in evolution [1]. The first evolution seeks increased capacity with the deployed optical infrastructure featuring a tree hierarchy with optical splitting for distribution. The second evolution, or so-called NG-PON2 (next generation PON2), will allow for deployment of a new infrastructure to more readily support wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). Typical deployment of WDM involves identical bandwidth allocations to all users in the frequency domain, with dynamic allocation of time slots to provide robust provisioning. An alternative WDM strategy is to use orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) as a dynamic allocation of frequency slots (subcarriers) as well as time slots to achieve even greater granularity for dynamic resource allocation.
