It is well known that the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) technology can bring into wireless systems many benefits such as increasing the channel capacity and enhancing the transmission reliability. Despite many merits of MIMO, its use in practical wireless mobile environments faces some difficulties. The main challenge is that the wireless link between a source and its destination often experiences severe shadow fading and path loss due to the complicated environment and the time-varying nature of the channel. Another restriction is the limited battery power in mobile terminals that affects severely the wireless transmission performance and link capacity. To overcome these limitations, cooperative MIMO communication, namely, using relays in MIMO systems, has recently been proposed as an efficient solution to next-generation mobile communication systems.
