Nanomaterials exhibit extraordinary properties and have the potential to lead to translational improvements in energy efficient materials such as composites, lubricants, and electronics that address an IMEADIATE NEED in reducing global energy demands. Their true potential has not yet been achieved due to a lack of a mechanistic understanding of their properties and structure-function relationships. The proposed equipment will enable a RESEARCH PROGRAM that leverages in situ methodologies to unveil nanomaterials mechanisms and optimize energy efficiency metrics in multiscale materials design. In situ electron microscope experiments will play a crucial role in directly visualizing deformation mechanisms and local atomic structure changes while simultaneously characterizing mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties.
