Landfill leachate is formed when surface water percolates through the disposed wastes, posing a potential pollution problem for groundwater and soils. The proposed project will focus on a closed municipal landfill located in Southwestern Ontario (Site) and it will be a collaborative effort between the University of Windsor (UOW) and GENIVAR Inc. (GENIVAR) that includes two (2) graduate students, one (1) UOW faculty member and two (2) GENIVAR's junior and senior personnel who will assist in the review and data evaluation to assess the potential environmental impacts associated with landfill leachate at the Site. The closed landfill is covered with a clay cap system and includes a leachate collection system with several existing groundwater and leachate monitoring wells. The proposed project will employ an innovative methodology that combines geophysics mapping and groundwater modeling to address specific research questions related to current conditions of the cap and leachate distribution at the Site. The main objectives of this proposed research project are to provide the research findings to assess and evaluate the current leachate conditions and to compare the new data with the existing compliance monitoring plan for further evaluation for potential implementation at the Site or other Sites in Southwest Ontario. The findings will be shared through written and oral communications with GENIVAR.
