Development of a Numerical Algorithm for Three Dimensional Automatic Lithology Correlation

We are proposing to develop a software system to build a three-dimensional model of the structure of sub-surface soil and rock (lithology) based on cuttings returned during well-water drilling. The system will be designed to develop solid models of "key" lithologic units within the study area. The system will be robust to noise in the input data resulting from human error, including ambiguous and synonymous textual labels. The technique developed will be able to save hours of manual labor with an estimated cost of $100,000 in the first two years of operation. Future work beyond this proposal is possible and would focus on the application of machine learning techniques to improve performance.
