Improving the performance of many industrial systems depends on the ability of its components to withstand more demanding and harsher process conditions. For example, to improve the thermal efficiency of a gas turbine or an internal combustion engine, higher engine temperature is required. One unique way to enhance the performance of engine components, such as a gas turbine combustor, is to coat them with a layer of high melting point, low thermal conductivity materials (e.g., ceramics) that protects them from higher engine temperature.
